The Making of a Gambling Generation

Posted by: Oladipo A. | 10/03 2006, 15:25

I sat at my father's feet the other day and asked him how things were when he left school. He had a number of things to say, but I can't remember all except

In the 60s and 70s, when you left school, you were assured of a white collar job, a company car and enough funds to make you proud that you went to school. Cool!

In the 80s, the story changed a little bit, you had to walk a little to get a job. But look on the bright side, there were jobs.

I really pity the graduates of the 90s, they bore the most burden. NO JOBS. Holes in shoes, I have a number of uncles who fall into that category.

I am of the early 00s, and our generation is not going the way of the previous generation. No way am I going to walk the streets of Lagos looking for a job. Entrepeneurship. Amen. Walk the streets, OK, looking for a job, NO WAY! Am starting out on my own.

Some youths share my thoughts but in a different way. They don't intend loooking for jobs, but they need to make money fast. The next option, GAMBLING.

I was wondering, if I won the ellusive lottery and was given a cheque of 25 Billion Naira, what would I do with it? Still wondering? I would start my own bank ofcourse.

Street Bank - banking with an attitude.

Why that slogan/motto or whatever it is called? Simple, our operating processes.....

GSM SongMail

The 4? 3? GSM network operators in Nigeria are fiercely struggling to achieve the top position among themselves. Who wouldn't? In the process, the cost/packing of SIM packs have reduced drastically, such that some networks now offer the consumer free credit just to pick their lines.

In the world's 63rd Most Expensive city

Posted by: Oladipo A. | 02/03 2006, 06:09
I a study i read, i was noted that Lagos is the World's 63rd Most Expensive City. How true! It took my mind back to an event that happened on September 15 2005.
A trailer carrying a load of sardines upturned a little just after Ikeja main bridge. It was paining to see my people scurrying and fighting to pick sardines from the road, off themselves and even from the gutter.
I took some pictures with my phone and am posting them here.
Click on each one to view a larger image.
Pictrures I took with my camera phon during some commotion at Ikeja when a trailer carryig sardines fell.
An Okada man who had about 10+ sardines in a polythene bag.

Here, the Okada man was chased by other people.

A view of the trailer that ?upturned?

Another view of the trailer. You can see people struggling to get sardines out of the gutter. Sad.

B4 u start hailing curses on me, read my story.
I am not saying I do not like the entity - Naira, but the value of it within the economy.
Listen to this:
  • I collect N500 from a friend of mine who owes me, feeling happy, I have some dough.
  • Have to make some photocopies 28 pages -N70, I have N430 left. Ok, still manageable.
  • I have to submit the photocopies, transport -N30, wow, N400 left. Nothing dey happen.
  • Oh, I forgot to bind the document, -N80. What? N320 left * Transport back to my place -N20. Balance: N300
  • Oh my God! Am hungry, havent had a bite since morning: Pepsi -N40, Biscuits -N30, mallam reminds me am owing him N30. Balance N200
  • Taking a bike home, will cost me N70, and i must eat in the evening.
  • The devil creeps behinds me and says "how will you get to work tomorrow?" :(
If you have got any bad money experiences, posting it here will make me and some others feel better. Be a good nigerian...

Web Development Tutorial

Posted by: Oladipo A. | 02/01 2006, 11:38
A lot of people have asked me to teach them the little I know in web design and development.
Now, before we continue: I consider design as the creation of a beautiful page while I consider development as the creation of a functional application. I am assuming the reader has some basic knowledge of design.
I use ASP and MSSQL (ok, i know ASP.NET is preferable but ASP is easier to learn - my opinion). I use Dreamweaver for the coding and use the Server Side Scripting capabilities.
In essence, get MSSQL (free MSDE from microsoft.com, dreamweaver from macromedia.com).
Wait for it...

Haba! Chris!

Posted by: Oladipo A. | 01/31 2006, 15:55
I think reading Chris Okotie's interview in a Saturday edition of The Punch (will try to recolect actual date) was simply a means for him use the events as a means of getting attention. From my point of view, it is obvious.
Read the last paragraph, where he is asking Obj to select a candidate
  • not from PDP
  • not corrupt
  • not from dis generation
  • not an office holder since 1960
  • and many other criteria...
Is it just me, or do all these criteria fit him? And he claiming to know thos behind the crashes? If he does, please let him "say the truth and let the devil be ashamed".
Someone tell Chris, he has lot more to do if he is to convince a lot of people that i know that truly he has intentions for this country.
Expecting replies to this.

Banks and our National ID Card

Posted by: Oladipo A. | 01/31 2006, 15:22
Sometime ago, I was given a cheque to cash from Wema Bank Maryland. I woke up in the morning, feeling good that I am going to have some cash to spend for the weekend, and arrived @ the bank with 1000kobo. Waited in line like a dutiful citizen of our great nation and was politely attended to by the "clerk".

Guess the good news, I could only withdraw if I had a Driver's License or International Passport. Ouch! I dont have any of those, what about my National ID Card. Sorry, I was politely told that it was "irrelevant" here and as such.....

I dont have a car, I dont know how to drive, therefore I dont have a driver's license.
I have never left my country, I dont have an International Pasport. Are you saying "i cant receive money without those 2"

I had the matter resolved after walking to anthony to and fro and getting the name of a contact man in the bank. Oh, i have spent all the money.

Are you going to reply to this?
